When you’re on vacation, it’s a splendid time to relax. In fact, to have a little time out and get away from it all is one of the main reasons we go on a vacation! But the one thing you can never take your eyes off is your children. It’s easy to take your eye off the ball when you’re relaxed and on a trip. If you make sure you prepare before you go you can make your vacation a much less stressful affair.
Think of anything you might need at your accommodation. Will you need a stairgate? A high chair? Many vacation destinations will supply these for little or no charge, but may need to know in advance. You may also be able to hire a playpen or even a stroller. Check in advance. The less have you have to take with you, the better! Packing for a family trip can require as much kit as a cross country trek!
Watch Out for Water
It’s likely on holiday your child will have more access to water than they do at home. When you get there, have a good look to see if there are gates and barriers to prevent your child getting near to the water. If there isn’t, then you’ll have to make sure they are properly supervised at all times to avoid potential accidents.
Feeling Hot Hot Hot!
It’s not just you who feels the heat. Babies and young children are extra sensitive to the effects of heat on the body. Make sure they wear a hat with a brim, loose-fitting clothes and are adequately hydrated. Drinking lots of fluids will help them avoid overheating and the risk of sunstroke. Don’t let your little one spend too much time in the sun and make sure they are away from the sun when it is at its hottest. This is usually between 2 and 4pm in the afternoon, so plan for indoor activities or even a nap. Hotter weather than you are used to can take it out of you! That’s why naps are so popular in warm climates.
Sunscreen, More Sunscreen.
Use the highest factor sunscreen you can find for your offspring. Even if your child hates having it applied, and there are some who do, you can make it into a fun time for all. Avoid upset by using colored lotion – this loses its color as it is rubbed into the skin. It can be enough of a distraction to ensure your children have it on all over! Another great idea is using sunscreen misters. They’re brilliant for quick coverage. Misters are also perfect for kids with Sensory issues who may not like having cream rubbed into their skin.
Don’t Forget Their Tootsies!
It’s easy to forget how sensitives those tiny little feet are. Adults may have hard skin and walk around happily barefoot on holiday, but don’t let your little one follow suit. Hot sand, tarmac and stones can burn sensitive skin on contact. Make sure they have a pair of enclosed, lightweight shoes. This will help them remain steady. Flip Flops can make children fall over their feet easily, and they’re a big cause of blisters.
Stay safe on vacation and enjoy your well-deserved break. Have you any tips or tricks to keep your kids happy in the sun?
