Most of us think of travel as a pleasant and uplifting experience, which enables us to at least temporarily get away from the gloom, stress and monotony of our daily routines. And indeed it is so. But let us not forget traveling has both pros and cons, especially when kids are involved. It’s hard to remain fresh and clean while constantly switching planes, taxis and buses -that’s a major disadvantage while one is on the road. And what about yours and your children’s underwear and clothes? There’s probably no washing machines in your hotel room or bungalow and kids’ clothes tend to get messy real quick. But do not worry – there are plenty of ways to stay fresh and at your best while on a vacation. Here are a few suggestions.
Stock on wet wipes and bathroom necessities
It would be a good idea to bring in as much supplies as possible. What should be present in your bag at all times? A few cakes of soap, toilet paper, shampoo, shower gel and several packages of antibacterial wet wipes. If your bag is large enough and there’s plenty of space there, you might buy a larger package of wipes, containing 80 or more pieces. These will suffice for the duration of the trip. You can clean spots from clothes with them or simply give them to the child, so that she or he can wipe their hands clean after consuming something sticky. Wet wipes come in very handy and in most cases smell lovely and fresh.
Pack a bath ball or a sponge
Most hotels provide tiny soaps and cute little bottles of shampoo and shower gel. However, sponges and bath balls are never included in this package and rightfully so. That’s why you should make sure you pack one or two bath balls in your luggage, one for you and another one for the child. Traveling in summer is exhausting and a lot of sweat is involved. You surely won’t be able to scrub off all that dirt and dead skin cells from your body, using only soap, so the sponge or bath ball will come in quite handy.
Use the services of a local laundry
You and your child sweated in the stuffy bus for hours so naturally, you want to change when you reach your destination. But unless you’ve packed your child’s entire closet in a bag, chances are you’ll soon run out of fresh clothes. Why not book the services of a local family-run laundry. You can drop off the dirty clothes there and return to pick them up on the following day – dry and fresh. And the best part is it won’t cost you a fortune as these small family businesses are usually quite affordable.
Handwashing is a must
Traveling and using public restrooms go hand in hand. Be sure to help your child establish a habit of always washing their hands after using the restroom, which of coarse is valid while you’re at home as well. This will help eliminate dangerous bacteria and microbes from ending up in your kid’s mouth as the little rascals are notorious for putting everything in their mouths (and this includes hands). In case there is no soap left on the sink in the public restroom (yep, stuff like that happens every now and then), you can always make use of the one you’ve packed, or in the worse case scenario, use one of the aforementioned wet wipes – it will eliminate dirt and bacteria at least partially.
Make use of the sink
As you can probably imagine, leaving your child’s underwear and socks at the local laundry is not the best option. You should consider washing them by hand with some soap (or in the worst case even shampoo) at the sink in your hotel room’s bathroom. Wondering how to plug the sink so that you can fill it with warm water? Socks are often times universal drain plugs, especially when you wrap them in a plastic bag beforehand. Hang the clean socks and underwear on the shower taps to dry and you’re done.
Staying fresh and clean while you’re on the road with your kids is not impossible. Keeping fresh while traveling will uplift your spirit and most importantly – safeguard your child against infections and diseases so that the entire family can reap the benefits of a well-planned vacation.
