This week is spring break for my son. On Monday we packed up the car and drove an hour and a half up to my aunts house for the day. My aunt co-owns this great company called barn house chicks. Her house is an amazing example of decorating your home in a creative way. Her house if full of fun decorative elements that show who they are as a family.
Take her fireplace for example. Right in the middle it says family. The lower right side of the fireplace there is old fire equipment because my uncle is a firemen. On the left there are two antique pots with fake flowers in them. The entire fireplace is beige, orange, and browns with little touches of color. It all ties into each other while also standing out from each other. There are items for everyone that will make a statement about Who you are. For the fireplace, it is the rustic vases and the old fire equipment.
Another idea my aunt has used is taking her children’s christening gowns and the handprints they have made and hanging them up in the guest bedroom. It is a great way to display something that normally is kept in the back of the closet or only worn once. No kids yet? No problem. You could also display your wedding dress and veil.
Instead of throwing your clothes in a ugly hamper that takes up space why not get one that is not so boring? This round hamper on wheels is not only cute, it is practical. It is large enough to hold a load of laundry while also being on wheels to make it easy to take back and forth to the laundry. The bag itself is removable and easy to wash and the legs are tall enough to store items underneath. Not crazy about putting your laundry out for everyone to see? Use it to hold your decorative pillows at night instead of throwing them on the floor.
The laundry room brings in another design element. She took her baskets and added knobs to them to match her cupboards. You can get knobs almost anywhere now a days and they are a great cheap and easy way to change the look of furniture. Hobby Lobby, Lowes, Home Depot, and Target are a few of my favorite places to look. You can get some very cute knobs for about a buck a piece.
Another cheap design option is to change out your lights switches. Here my aunt has gone with something that is just slightly darker than the wall so it still blends in while standing out. So yes, changing your light switches is not just for your kids rooms it could be for the whole house. Creative light switches are found all over the internet as well as in many decorative stores and will normally cost you between five and twenty dollars.
Your dining room is a great place to change the decor with the season. Right now being spring time the room is set up with pastel colors. Don’t always feel that your center piece for your dining room table has to be in the center. Having a tall center piece at one end of the table still gives it a decorative feel while allowing room for your guests to see each other across the table. It also makes this table look unusually long.
The best way to start your table is with a table cloth or runner. It adds a design across the table not just in the center. You could have different options for every season or go with one that is neutral for multiple seasons. Candles and candle sticks are a great way to add different heights to any decoration and can fill in dead space. Flowers are a great way to bring in some colors for that season. Don’t forget your one decorative element that states the theme for the event/season. The Easter bunny and some eggs is a perfect focal point for this table.
If you have a china hutch in your dining room that is another great way to bring in not only seasonal decor but some items that remind you of past travels like the oil on the top left shelf. Don’t be afraid to use items that normally would not fit in like the light on the bottom.
Instead of just throwing your fruit on the counter in the kitchen why not come up with a pretty bowl or a beautiful scale to hold it? This scale now not only keeps the fruit from making the counter look cluttered it becomes a focal point for the kitchen. It also has a rustic element that ties it into other parts of the house while adding a light pop of color.
Dried out flowers are another way to add some color and fill a beautiful vase like this one over the television. My aunt loves sunflowers. By putting them in a vase that is a different color it makes both the flowers and the vase stand out. She found the awesome plate behind the vase that not only ties in the blue but uses another opposite color red to make it pop even more. Don’t be afraid to use colors that stand out from each other.
She also took this same theme and placed it in another part of the room. Using the same decor in a different way makes them tie into each other while also keeping them different. You could do this with flowers, candles, or a piece of art work. She has used the blue in the background and the blue in the vase as a pop of color and the sunflowers as a decorative element. She continued the pop of color in other parts of the room. Over the piano she hung this rustic old window that is that same color of blue. The last creative thing she did was put a quote under the window. These easy to remove wall quotes can be found in target, hobby lobby, Walmart, Michaels, and all over the internet. My favorite place to find them is on Etsy. You can find almost any quote or design for your walls.
