A lot of people I know go through a lot of stress when it comes to choosing a new home for their family. It’s no real surprise – an area with good schools, for example, is essential to give your kids the best start in life. But, local facilities aside, there isn’t much that you need. I’ve been thinking about how much I love our home recently and have boiled it down to five simple reasons. And here they are for your reading pleasure!
LOTS of storage
I don’t know about you, but our house gets kind messy – often. It’s amazing how much untidiness young children can create, and I won’t lie to you – it takes a long time to clear up after them. But, it’s easier if you have plenty of storage. Large cupboards, boxes in shelves and beneath beds – the more space you have for storage, the easier your life will be. Give everything its own home and you will be tidy within minutes, rather than hours.
The more outdoor space your children have, the better. It’s no good to keep them cooped up inside all day, but on those days going out is impossible, a bit of garden will work wonders. Fresh air, nature, and enough room to stretch their legs for an hour or so are all that is needed. That said, I do have friends in the city who raise their children in apartments – for the moment. It can be tough, but even a safe balcony space can help them get that all-important fresh air. And, of course, balconies are great for growing things like plant, herbs and tomatoes, which bring a little nature into the equation.
The home of your dreams probably isn’t the perfect choice for a young family. Sensible and practical always beats fresh and stylish! You can go for a little of both, of course – but choose the right areas for flashiness and keep the family living space as practical as possible. You can look at home renovations to mix things up a little at a later stage, but trust me – you will be wise to wait until the kids have grown!
One eye on money
Having kids is an expensive business, so it’s a wise idea to keep track of your spending in the home. You will be doing about three or four washing loads a day in some cases, and you will get through a lot more electricity and gas for heating. Make sure that you home is well insulated, and get an energy meter installed to keep track of what you are spending. The more money you save on bills, the more you can spend on giving your kids a happy and healthy childhood.
Finally, there’s one thing that every family home needs – happiness. If you are happy parents, your kids will have a great time and enjoy their childhoods. Sure, your home might not be perfect. But, it is your home, and it’s a place that is yours to relax in and spend precious time with your young kids. It doesn’t last long – so enjoy every second!
